More than 15 million root canals are performed each year in the US, according to the American Association of Endodontists. You may be wondering why a root canal is necessary and the purpose behind the commonly performed dental treatment. Here’s what you should know,

The Reasons Behind a Root Canal

Here are the two most common reasons why someone may need to turn to our Berkley, MI, general dentist for a root canal:

Decay: This is probably one of the most common reasons for a root canal. If a cavity goes undetected and untreated, the decay can continue to spread until it reaches the inside of the tooth where the nerve is. Once the nerve of the tooth (aka dental pulp) is infected, a root canal is necessary to remove the decay and the infected nerve.

Trauma: If you experience a cracked or broken tooth, chances are fairly good that you’ll also need a root canal. This is because trauma can expose the nerve of the tooth or dental pulp. This can lead to further damage to the inside of the tooth, as well as pain. To preserve what’s left of your tooth, we will need to remove the affected nerve.
